Green technology application in natural product industry 🌱

Sonication is the act of applying sound energy to agitate particles or discontinuous fibers in a liquid. Ultrasonication is conducted either using ultrasonic waterbath or an ultrasonic probe at frequency normally set at 20kHz or more. With appropriate solid to liquid ratio, right time and temperature combination, solvent of choice, both methods have been proven to expedite the extraction process by liberating active compounds from plant matrixes as compared to conventional extraction methods such as maceration, percolation and reflux extraction. From long hours, now the extraction can be done within an hour ⏳ Amazing!

As a phytochemist, we have a bigger agenda - saving our planet. From an industrial perspective, this sustainable technique could save overconsumption of gallons of organic solvent and excessive energy use yet producing same or higher quality of botanical extracts. Let's make the world a better place not only for us but to our young generation to live in 🌏

While waiting for extraction, let's have a selfie 😊
